The devastating effects of the flood in Opuoma, Obiakpu, Mmahu and Abacheke communities in Egbema in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State have become unbearable with over 25,000 inhabitants displaced from their homes.
Now, there is sudden hunger in these communities that were originally the food basket of Imo State. As oil producing communities already suffering the devastating effects of the oil exploration activities on their land, environment and water resources, the effects of the flood have added more salt to injury.
The situation is pitiable as people of these communities have become more impoverished with the loss of their houses, farmlands, properties, etc. to the flood. Worse still is their deteriorating health conditions following the lack of good drinking water and shelter as well as the famine that suddenly broke up in the area.
The negative impacts of the flood have also hit the entire Imo Community and its environs with the sharp rise in cost of food items, such as rice, beans, garri, etc. Today, in Owerri, a cup of garri now sells for fifty naira (N50) while twenty cups were sold for only two hundred naira (N200) last two weeks. In Egbema, a cup of garri now sells for one hundred naira (N100).
