With funding from the Imo State Government, AFRYDEF trained four hundred (400) Secondary School Principals and Directors of the Imo State Secondary Education Management Board on Capacity Building for the Effective Management of the Secondary School System in Imo State, Nigeria in February, 2002.
Among others, the objectives of the project were:
- To x-ray the failures of past teaching styles and management approaches in the secondary schools in the state.
- To introduce the participants to newly developed techniques of managing students and public offices.
- To identify problem areas and develop new strategies and action plans that will improve teaching styles, public sector management, counseling, etc.
- To equip participants with practical problem-solving and conflict mitigation skills as ways of controlling and preventing crime and violence amongst students.
Resource persons drawn from the universities and the civil society engaged to do justice to the project objectives were: Barr. Uche Wisdom Durueke of Center for Peace Across Borders, Prof. Sabbas Asoegwu and Mazi Gibson Okoroafor, all of Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State.
